Aaron Donald is the NFL’s best defensive player and as a result, teams have begun to double team him now at the line of scrimmage during the 2020 NFL season.
According to Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay, Donald should still be able to overcome these double teams and continue doing his job at a high level.
“That’s something that Aaron has dealt with his whole career. I’ve seen some of the most creative protection adjustments, utilization of backs, which way you slide the line. I think this guy has dealt with it more than anybody that I’ve ever seen in my coaching career. That’s something that was going on long before I got here.
“This guy’s a freak. He does as good a job of anybody of creating opportunities for others, but he still is winning on those doubles,” McVay said about Donald.
The only hope for opposing teams is to double Donald but even then he has a good chance of getting to the quarterback and pressuring and/or sacking him.
Donald has been an absolute defensive force ever since he was the No. 13 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and has made the Pro Bowl in each and every season so far.
Donald’s impact on the Rams is truly speechless and it provides the rest of the defense with the ability to move around and trust their partner every season.
With Donald rushing the passer, that extra time involved allows Jalen Ramsey to perfect his defensive route and truly cash in on any footballs thrown his way.
As for the rest of the defense, the fact that Donald is doubled on almost every play creates gaps and strong openings for other linemen through their 4-1 start.
If not for Donald’s ability to truly disrupt the quarterback, the defense would have a much harder time being as dominant as they have been to begin this season.
With their toughest stretch of games on the horizon now, Donald will need to kick it into another gear and continue to be the driving force in his team’s success.
If Donald can do so, the sky is the limit for the Rams.
